Cape Hatteras National Seashore encompasses the beaches, marshes, and sounds of North Carolina barrier islands. There are a variety of opportunities for activities here including beachgoing, kayaking/canoeing, fishing, birdwatching, lighthouse visits, and more.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore is dog friendly. Dogs are allowed everywhere other than swimming beaches and buildings. This includes trails, some beaches, campgrounds, and on boats.

Trail Policy

Dogs are allowed on all trails while on a leash no longer than 6'. You can read about the trails on the National Park Service site.

Campground Policy

Dogs are allowed at campgrounds while on a leash. Cape Hatteras National Seashore has the following campgrounds:

Beach Policy

Dogs are not allowed on dedicated swimming beaches (check the signage at the beaches), but are allowed on other beaches while on a leash.

Hunting

Warning: Hunting is allowed at this location. Please be aware of and familiarize yourself with hunting seasons, and exercise appropriate caution with your dog. During hunting season(s), you may also want to consider having your dog wear a blaze orange vest.
