El Malpais National Monument is Dog Friendly
El Malpais National Monument encompasses a volcanic landscape with geologic features such as lava flows, cinder condes, lava tubes, and sandstone bluffs. The park offers great views from driving along the roads as well as a number of hiking trails.
El Malpais National Monument is dog friendly, and dogs are allowed on trails while on a leash. Please make sure you read the section below trail policy, though, since some trails can hurt your dog's paws!

Trail Policy
Dogs are allowed on trails while on a leash no longer than 6'. However, even though pets are allowed on all trails, many of the trails are on rough basalt which can hurt your dog's paws!
The trails that are easy on your dog's paws are the following:
- El Mapais Visitor Center Trail
- Sandstone Bluffs Overlook
- El Calderon Area - 4.8 miles of total loop
