Fort Union is set in the grass prairie on the Santa Fe Trail, and currently encompasses the remains of a 19th century military fort. The fort was operational from 1851 - 1891. The park offers a museum of the local history, trails, and is a great location to view the night sky.

Fort Union National Monument is somewhat dog friendly. Dogs are allowed on trails, but they are not allowed in buildings such as the Visitor Center or museum. Do not leave your dog unattended, as it can get hot very quickly here.

Trail Policy

Dogs are allowed on trails while on a leash no longer than 6'. Dogs are not allowed insdie public buildings.
